Heterotermes tenuis
Heterotermes tenuis
Description
Heterotermes tenuis is a species of termite belonging to the order Isoptera and the family Rhinotermitidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in tropical regions where it causes extensive damage to various crops by consuming cellulose-based tissues both underground and at the soil surface.
The primary crop affected by this termite is sugarcane. The infestation frequently leads to poor stand establishment, reduced stalk yields, and lower sugar content. Besides sugarcane, the pest may attack various tree seedlings, roots of horticultural crops, and wooden structural elements used in field irrigation or storage.
The biology of H. tenuis revolves around a caste system within subterranean colonies. Workers are responsible for foraging and structural damage, while soldiers defend the colony. Development proceeds through a hemimetabolous cycle, where nymphs progressively mature into workers, soldiers, or alates (winged reproductive forms) that emerge during swarming events to establish new nests.
Damage caused by this pest is often subterranean and hidden from sight until plant decline is visible. The termites excavate galleries into roots and stems, filling them with soil particles. This activity destroys the plant's vascular system, causing stunting, wilting, and increased susceptibility to environmental stress or secondary pathogens.
Effective management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to reduce termite pressure:
- Application of soil-incorporated insecticides at planting.
- Use of resistant or tolerant crop varieties where available.
- Implementing baiting stations with slow-acting termiticides to eliminate the queen.
- Sanitation practices such as removing harvest residues that harbor termite populations.
- Monitoring soil moisture levels, as certain species thrive in specific humidity conditions.
