Description
Hirschmanniella is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. These microscopic, worm-like organisms are known as migratory endoparasites, specifically thriving in wet soil conditions, which makes them a primary concern in rice cultivation globally.
This pest mainly targets rice plants, causing severe damage to the root systems. Besides rice, various aquatic and semi-aquatic plants, including common sedges and weeds, can act as hosts, allowing the nematode population to persist in the field even after the main crop is harvested.
The biology of Hirschmanniella is uniquely adapted to aquatic environments. Nematodes penetrate the root tissue, where they spend most of their life cycle feeding on the cortical cells. They move freely within the roots and can also migrate through the surrounding soil or irrigation water to find new hosts, making their life cycle highly efficient for colonization.
Damage caused by these nematodes is characterized by necrosis of the root tissue, which weakens the plant's overall health. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), and reduced tiller numbers. Because the damage is subterranean, it is often misidentified as nutrient deficiency, leading to significant yield losses before the problem is even detected.
