The Hirschmanniella behningi is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. As an endoparasite, this nematode thrives by dwelling inside the root tissues of host plants, which allows it to evade many external environmental stressors and complicates direct chemical control measures.

This nematode primarily affects aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation, though it poses a significant threat to agricultural crops grown in waterlogged or flooded conditions. Common hosts include rice crops and various wetland plants, where the high moisture content of the soil facilitates the migration of the larvae between roots.

The biological cycle of this pest encompasses the egg stage, four larval molts, and the mature adult stage. Both larvae and adults are capable of burrowing into the root cortex to feed. Once inside, they move through the tissue, destroying cells and disrupting the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients from the soil.

The primary symptom of infestation is the development of necrotic lesions on the root systems. As the damage progresses, the roots lose their structural integrity and turn brown or black. This internal decay manifests outwardly as stunted vegetative growth, leaf chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield, especially in crops like rice that are sensitive to root health.

Control of Hirschmanniella behningi relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on environmental manipulation. Key management tactics include:
