Description
Hirschmanniella gracilis is a species of migratory endoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Pratylenchidae. It is a microscopic organism primarily found in aquatic and semi-aquatic ecosystems, where it functions as a serious threat to specialized plant species.
The primary agricultural host for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa). However, the nematode maintains its populations on various hydrophytic plants, including sedges (Cyperaceae), rushes, and reeds. These wild plants serve as primary reservoirs, allowing the nematode to persist in the environment even when main crops are not present.
The biological cycle of the nematode occurs mostly inside the root cortical tissues. The female deposits eggs within the host tissue, and all larval stages, as well as adults, feed on the internal contents of the roots. Their mobility allows them to move between roots through the soil or water, facilitating rapid colonization of new plants in waterlogged conditions.
The damage caused by Hirschmanniella gracilis is characterized by root lesions, yellowing of leaves, and stunted plant growth. By destroying the root cortex, the nematode compromises the plant’s ability to absorb water and essential nutrients, which often results in reduced tiller formation and significant yield losses at harvest time.
Integrated management practices are essential to mitigate the impact of this nematode:
- field drainage and soil drying to disrupt the nematode's lifecycle;
- aggressive weed control to remove alternative hosts;
- crop rotation with non-host species;
- application of nematicides where populations exceed economic thresholds;
- maintenance of healthy, nutrient-rich soil conditions to improve root resilience.
