While commonly found in natural freshwater habitats, it is recognized as a potential pest in commercial aquaculture, where it can cause significant damage to early-stage fish fry and nursery ponds.
Systematically, this beetle belongs to the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by their compact, oval bodies and dark coloring, which serves as camouflage in murky water. They are agile swimmers and are capable of colonizing various types of stagnant or slow-moving water bodies, including agricultural reservoirs.
The biology of Hydroporus palustris follows a life cycle consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Both larvae and adults are predatory.
