Systematic position: Hydroporus striola is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Dytiscidae. These are small predaceous diving beetles that typically inhabit stagnant or slow-moving freshwater ecosystems, frequently appearing in managed artificial ponds and irrigation ditches.

Crops affected: While not a pest of terrestrial agriculture, this beetle is a significant nuisance in aquaculture. It primarily impacts fish farming by preying on fish fry and fingerlings in nursery ponds, which can lead to substantial reductions in the production of stocking material for commercial fisheries.

Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into aquatic vegetation. Both the larvae and adults are aggressive predators. Once the larval stage is complete, the insect moves to the damp soil along the pond bank to pupate, eventually emerging as an adult and returning to the aquatic environment to breed.

Character of damage: The damage is primarily caused by larvae feeding on small fish. Using specialized mouthparts, they inject digestive enzymes into the prey, causing rapid mortality. High population densities of Hydroporus striola can devastate entire batches of fish fry, posing a constant challenge to hatchery managers and pond operators.

Control measures: Management practices focus on habitat disruption and physical exclusion to minimize beetle populations:

  • Periodic drainage and disinfection of pond basins to eliminate larvae and pupae.
  • Removal of excessive aquatic weeds to eliminate breeding sites for the beetles.
