Description
Hydroporus tessellatus is a species of diving beetle belonging to the family Dytiscidae (order Coleoptera). While primarily known as predators in natural habitats, they can occasionally become a nuisance in human-made systems such as hydroponic greenhouses or aquaponic facilities, where they interfere with sensitive plant production processes.
These beetles are well-adapted to aquatic life with streamlined bodies that allow for agile swimming. Their distinct pattern, characterized by a mosaic of light and dark spots on the elytra, provides camouflage against debris or aquatic plant life found within water tanks, making manual detection difficult for agronomists.
The damage caused by Hydroporus tessellatus is mainly attributed to the larval stage. The larvae possess strong mandibles capable of gnawing on tender roots, stems, and plant tissues submerged in water. These mechanical wounds often serve as entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal infections, leading to plant decay and potential loss of yield.
The biological cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adults are capable of flight, allowing them to colonize new water sources rapidly. This mobility is a significant factor in pest management, as the beetles can easily enter facilities through open ventilation or gaps in the infrastructure.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this species focuses on exclusion and mechanical control. Implementing fine-mesh netting on all ventilation points and water circulation intakes is essential. Additionally, manual removal of adults and regular cleaning of reservoirs to eliminate potential pupation sites are effective strategies to keep populations below economic injury levels.
