The water deer (Hydropotes inermis) is a distinct species within the family Cervidae and the order Artiodactyla. Unlike other deer, this species lacks antlers, but males possess prominent tusk-like canine teeth. Due to their tendency to forage in large groups and their ability to consume significant amounts of vegetation, they are increasingly recognized as a significant pest in agricultural sectors across several regions.
The diet of the water deer is herbivorous, focusing on succulent crops. They are particularly attracted to cereal crops, legumes, various leafy vegetables, and young nursery stock. During their feeding cycles, they graze extensively on the foliage, but the mechanical damage caused by trampling is often just as destructive to the commercial value of the crop as the consumption itself.
The biology of the species is notable for its reproductive capacity. A single female can give birth to a surprisingly large litter, allowing the population to recover quickly if left unchecked. They favor habitats that offer both cover and proximity to feeding grounds, such as riparian zones or marshy areas adjacent to farmland, which allows them to retreat rapidly after feeding at night.
Damage symptoms include ragged leaf margins, stripped stems, and entire sections of fields that appear flattened. This herbivory significantly reduces the photosynthetic area of the plants, leads to stunted growth, and makes the crops vulnerable to secondary infections. In high-density populations, the total loss of a harvest can occur in a very short period of time.
Mitigation strategies must focus on exclusion and behavioral deterrence. Essential measures include:
- Erecting high-tensile mesh fencing at least 1.5 meters high.
- Utilizing motion-activated light and noise deterrents to discourage intrusion.
- Application of chemical repellent sprays on field borders to deter browsing.
- Strategic land management, including clearing brush near field edges to reduce concealment.
Integrated wildlife management remains the most effective strategy for farmers facing recurring issues with this species. It is crucial to monitor field perimeters during the early stages of crop growth, as this is when plants are most susceptible to irreversible damage. Coordination with local wildlife authorities is recommended for long-term population management.
