Girdled snail

Hygromia cinctella

Description

Systematic position: The Girdled snail (Hygromia cinctella) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, order Stylommatophora, and family Hygromiidae. It is a terrestrial gastropod that has been spreading across Europe, increasingly becoming a nuisance in horticultural settings, urban gardens, and vegetable patches due to its high adaptability.

Host plants: This species is a generalist herbivore. It feeds on a diverse range of vegetation, including ornamental flowers, various vegetable crops (particularly leafy greens like lettuce and cabbage), as well as young shoots of fruit trees and shrubs. Seedlings are at the highest risk, as the snails can consume tender tissues, often destroying young plants entirely.

Biology and life cycle: The snail leads a secretive lifestyle, preferring cool, moist, and shaded environments. It is primarily nocturnal or active during periods of high humidity and overcast weather. The life cycle involves laying eggs in moist soil or under leaf litter. The development of juveniles is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with optimal humidity being crucial for their survival.

Nature of damage: Hygromia cinctella feeds by scraping the leaf epidermis using its radula. This activity results in ragged holes, chewed leaf margins, and characteristic dried mucous trails left on the plant surface. In cases of high population density, plants suffer significant aesthetic and physiological damage, leading to stunted growth and increased susceptibility to opportunistic plant pathogens.

Control measures: Management requires an integrated approach to mitigate the damage caused by these molluscs:

  • Regular maintenance including weeding and removing debris where snails find shelter.
  • Implementing water management practices to avoid constant soil moisture near susceptible crops.
  • Using physical barriers such as crushed eggshells, gravel, or wood ash around garden beds.
  • Applying molluscicides containing metaldehyde or iron phosphate if population numbers exceed economic thresholds.
