Hygrotus is a genus of diving beetles belonging to the family Dytiscidae. While primarily known as aquatic insects, certain species within this genus can become problematic in agricultural environments, particularly in flooded fields such as rice paddies, where they may interact negatively with young crop development.
Taxonomically, they are classified under the order Coleoptera. The genus includes several species that are well-adapted to freshwater habitats. Their biological success is attributed to their ability to fly between water bodies, allowing them to rapidly colonize new areas that have been recently flooded or irrigated.
The lifecycle of Hygrotus follows a holometabolous development pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on submerged vegetation or debris. The larvae are active predators or opportunistic feeders that develop in the water column before moving to the shore or soil to pupate, emerging later as adult beetles ready to reproduce.
The damage caused by these beetles is most severe during the seedling stage of rice. Adults and larvae may feed on the tender tissues of young roots and stems, causing wilting and loss of plant vigor. This feeding behavior reduces the crop stand density, necessitating prompt intervention to prevent yield losses.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies to minimize the impact:

- Keeping irrigation canals clear of excessive aquatic weeds that provide shelter.
