Ship-timber beetle

Systematic position. The ship-timber beetle, primarily represented by Hylecoetus dermestoides, belongs to the family Lymexylidae, order Coleoptera. These beetles are unique due to their reliance on symbiotic fungi, which they cultivate within the wood, making them distinct from other common wood-boring insects.

Host plants and affected objects. The pest targets a variety of deciduous trees, including oak, beech, birch, and alder. It is a significant economic threat to fresh-cut logs, timber stockpiles, and stressed or weakened living trees in forest environments, where it penetrates deep into the wood structure.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle involves a symbiotic relationship where the female introduces fungal spores into the wood during oviposition. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the timber to feed on the fungal mycelium growing inside their galleries. The larval development stage can take one to two years, depending on environmental temperatures and wood moisture levels.

Nature of damage and pest impact. The primary economic damage is caused by the larvae creating numerous tunnels, known as pinholes or wormholes. This activity severely degrades the quality of lumber and timber, rendering it unsuitable for high-grade furniture, veneers, or construction purposes, while also introducing secondary decay pathogens.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for minimizing losses. Key practices include:

• Removing felled timber from the forest as quickly as possible before the beetles begin their flight.
• Debarking logs immediately after harvest to prevent females from laying eggs.
• Applying chemical insecticides to log stacks in infested areas.
• Maintaining forest health through the removal of susceptible or dying trees to reduce overall pest density.
