Description

Systematic position: The timberworm beetle (Hylecoetus lugubris) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Lymexylidae. It is a highly specialized wood-destroying insect known for its intricate symbiotic relationship with fungi, which allows it to thrive inside the hard tissues of woody plants.

Affected crops: This pest primarily targets a wide range of broad-leaved deciduous trees, including oak, beech, birch, elm, and lime. While it favors fallen or damaged timber, it can also infest standing trees that are already physiologically stressed, making it a significant concern for both forestry and timber storage facilities.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves a complex symbiosis with Endomyces fungi. Female beetles deposit eggs into bark crevices. Once hatched, the larvae bore deep into the sapwood and heartwood, introducing fungal spores into their galleries. The larvae feed primarily on the fungal mycelium growing on the walls of these galleries rather than on the wood fiber itself.

Character of damage and harm: The larvae drill deep radial galleries into the wood, often reaching the center of the trunk. These galleries are typically stained black by the fungi introduced by the larvae. This damage significantly degrades the wood quality, rendering logs unsuitable for high-grade carpentry, veneer production, or structural construction purposes.

Control measures: Management of Hylecoetus lugubris requires strict adherence to silvicultural sanitation. Key strategies include:

  • Removing freshly felled or windthrown trees from the forest before the adult flight period.
  • Debarking logs intended for storage to prevent oviposition.
