Ship-timber beetle

The ship-timber beetle (Lymexylon navale) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Lymexylidae family. It is a well-known technical pest that thrives by boring deep into wood, causing significant structural degradation to timber and forest stands, which historically earned it a reputation as a threat to wooden naval constructions.

This beetle primarily targets various hardwood species, including oak, beech, elm, and linden. The damage is caused by the larvae, which burrow extensively into the sapwood and heartwood. While they often colonize stressed or dying trees, large populations can attack healthy timber, especially in log yards or improperly stored wood, rendering the material worthless.

The biological success of Lymexylon navale is attributed to a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi. Female beetles carry fungal spores into the wood galleries during oviposition. Once hatched, the larvae consume both the wood tissues and the fungal mycelium growing within their tunnels, which provides necessary nutrients that wood alone lacks.

The presence of the pest is indicated by fine boring dust (frass) appearing around small circular entry holes on the bark or wood surface. Internally, the galleries form complex, branching tunnels that compromise the mechanical integrity of the timber. As the larvae grow, their feeding activity can destroy entire sections of logs, leading to substantial financial losses for the forestry industry.

• Implement timely sanitary logging to remove infested trees from the forest.
• Debark logs promptly after harvesting to prevent colonization.
• Store timber in dry, well-ventilated areas to discourage fungal and larval development.
• Apply protective chemical treatments or insecticides to log piles during flight periods.
• Utilize pheromone monitoring to detect and track adult beetle populations in vulnerable areas.
