Description
Systematic position: The beetle Hylecoetus flabellicornis is a member of the Coleoptera order and belongs to the Lymexylidae family (commonly known as ship-timber beetles). This insect is recognized as an obligate wood-boring pest that relies on unique biological adaptations to survive within tree tissues.
Host plants and damage: The pest primarily targets broad-leaved tree species, including oak, beech, birch, and alder. It is a significant concern for the forestry industry, as it infests freshly felled timber, logs left in logging sites, and untreated stored wood, causing economic losses in the timber trade.
Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi, mainly Endomyces species. Adult females deposit eggs on the bark or exposed wood, and the emerging larvae bore deep galleries into the tree. Crucially, the larvae do not consume the wood directly but feed on the fungal mycelium they cultivate within the tunnels.
Nature of damage and pest status: Larval activity results in deep, dark-stained tunnels that penetrate far into the heartwood. These galleries are often filled with wood dust and fungal growth, which severely reduces the structural integrity and aesthetic value of the timber, making it unsuitable for high-quality carpentry or furniture production.
Control measures: Effective management focuses on rapid removal and processing of harvested timber before the flight period of the beetles. Debarking logs immediately after felling serves as a primary mechanical defense. For long-term storage, it is recommended to store wood in dry, ventilated areas or apply appropriate chemical wood preservatives to deter oviposition.
