Sea buckthorn hawk-moth

The Sea buckthorn hawk-moth (Hyles hippophaes) is a species of moth belonging to the family Sphingidae. It is recognized as a potential pest in regions where sea buckthorn is cultivated, as its larvae feed exclusively on the foliage of this specific shrub.

The primary host plant for this insect is Hippophae rhamnoides. While the moth is an interesting subject for entomologists, its larvae can become highly destructive in orchards, causing significant defoliation of sea buckthorn bushes, which hinders fruit production and the overall health of the shrubs.

The biological cycle involves metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. The species typically overwinters in the pupal stage, buried in the soil near the host plant. Once adults emerge, they mate and lay eggs on the undersides of the leaves. The larvae grow rapidly, feeding intensely to store energy for their subsequent transformation.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical. The caterpillars consume leaves rapidly, often starting from the edges or creating large holes. Severe infestations can lead to complete stripping of the branches, causing the plant to undergo extreme stress, which significantly impacts the harvest and makes the buckthorn vulnerable to winter damage.

To mitigate the damage, farmers and gardeners should implement the following strategies:

• Manual collection of larvae in small-scale plantings during early instar stages.
• Application of biological control agents, such as B. thuringiensis, which are selective and environmentally safe.
• Soil cultivation during late autumn to expose and destroy overwintering pupae.
• Application of appropriate insecticides during peak larval activity if infestations exceed threshold levels.
• Monitoring for egg clusters to prevent the larvae from causing early-stage damage.
