Description
Systematic position. The bat hawk moth (Hyles vespertilio) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae. It is a specialized species primarily found in mountainous regions, known for its distinct morphology and specific ecological requirements compared to other hawk moths.
Host plants. The primary host plants for the larvae (caterpillars) are species belonging to the genus Epilobium (willowherbs). In agricultural or horticultural settings, this moth may occasionally interact with ornamental varieties of willowherb, leading to concerns regarding foliage health.
Biology and life cycle. This species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, consisting of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are nocturnal and crepuscular. Pupation typically occurs within the soil or debris, where the insect remains throughout the winter until the environmental conditions become favorable in the spring.
Character of damage and harm. The larvae feed aggressively on the leaves of the host plants, often consuming the entire leaf blade and leaving only the midrib. Control measures. Due to the moth's relatively low population density and conservation status in many regions, intensive chemical control is generally not required. Practical strategies include:

- Applying biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis if severe defoliation is observed on high-value plants.
- Managing weed populations of Epilobium in adjacent areas.
