Description
The Pine hawk-moth (Hyloicus pinastri) is a significant member of the Sphingidae family within the Lepidoptera order. It is widely recognized as a major defoliator of conifer trees, specifically targeting pine species. Although often seen as a minor pest, high population densities can lead to severe stress on individual trees and vast forest areas alike.
The primary hosts for this moth include various species of the Pinus genus. However, the larvae are occasionally observed feeding on Picea (spruce), Larix (larch), and Abies (fir) species. The selection of host trees is largely influenced by the presence of young, healthy needles that provide the necessary nutrients for the rapid development of the caterpillar.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adult moths are typically on the wing from June through July. Following mating, eggs are laid singly or in small groups on the needles. The larval stage lasts for several weeks, during which the caterpillars feed voraciously before descending to the forest floor to pupate in the soil or leaf litter.
The damage caused by the Pine hawk-moth is characterized by severe needle loss. Early instar larvae graze on the sides of the needles, while older larvae consume the needles entirely, leaving only short, woody stubs behind. This defoliation reduces the tree's vigor, making it highly susceptible to secondary pests such as bark beetles and increasing the risk of tree mortality.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key techniques include:
- Regular monitoring of egg-laying and larval populations.
- Encouraging the presence of natural predators like birds and parasitic wasps.
- Applying selective biological insecticides (such as Bacillus thuringiensis) during the early larval stages.
