Description

The Pine hawk-moth (Hyloicus pinastri) is a species of moth belonging to the family Sphingidae. It is a specialized pest primarily affecting coniferous trees. The adult moth is large, with a wingspan reaching up to 90 mm, characterized by cryptic grey and brown patterns that allow it to remain invisible when resting on tree trunks during the daylight hours.

This insect primarily infests various species of the Pinus genus, with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) being the most common host. While it rarely destroys established mature forests, it poses a significant threat to young plantations, nurseries, and ornamental pine trees where heavy defoliation can compromise the health of the host tree.

The life cycle of the Pine hawk-moth is typically univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Adult moths emerge between late May and July, during which mating and oviposition occur. Eggs are laid on needles. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo five instars, feeding voraciously throughout the summer months before pupating in the soil or forest litter to overwinter.

The primary type of damage caused by the larvae is defoliation. Early-stage larvae skeletonize the needles, whereas mature larvae consume entire needles, leaving only the short bases. During outbreaks, the feeding activity can lead to widespread thinning of the canopy, stressing the trees and leaving them susceptible to secondary attacks by wood-boring beetles.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Maintaining biodiversity in forest stands helps support natural predators like birds and parasitic wasps that keep populations in check. When infestation levels are high, targeted applications of biological insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, or systemic chemical agents during the early larval stages are the standard approach for control.
