Hyphydrus beetle

The Hyphydrus genus belongs to the Dytiscidae family within the Coleoptera order. These small diving beetles are commonly found in freshwater habitats, including flooded rice fields, where they interact with the crop environment.

The primary crop affected by these beetles is rice. While adults and larvae are largely predaceous, they can cause mechanical damage to young rice seedlings during the early stages of flooding, compromising the integrity of the plant's submerged parts.

The biology of the insect follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are highly mobile, capable of flying between water bodies to colonize new areas, while the larval stages develop within the water column, often hiding in organic debris.

The damage is primarily characterized by the grazing of stems and root tissues of young rice plants. High infestation levels can lead to reduced plant density and stunted growth, negatively impacting the establishment of the crop in aquatic farming systems.

Control measures primarily focus on water management. Draining rice fields periodically is a highly effective cultural practice to disrupt the larval development cycle. In cases of severe outbreaks, selective insecticides that are safe for the aquatic ecosystem may be utilized.
