The primary crop damaged by this species is rice. During the early developmental stages of the plant, when rice paddies are flooded, both adult beetles and larvae may feed on tender young shoots, roots, and germinating seeds, causing significant economic concern to growers.

The biological cycle of Hyphydrus ovatus is tied to aquatic environments. Adults overwinter in mud or debris at the bottom of ponds. In the spring, they emerge to mate, and females deposit eggs on submerged plant tissues. The larvae undergo several molts before pupating in the damp soil near the water's edge, completing their life cycle in the warm season.

Damage caused by this beetle is largely mechanical. By grazing on the submerged parts of young rice seedlings, the larvae disrupt the plant's ability to absorb nutrients and thrive, leading to gaps in crop stands. The resulting loss in plant density can lead to yield reductions if the infestation reaches high levels during the critical establishment phase.
