Description
The Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris, often associated with the Iberus classification context in older literature) is a highly invasive mollusk species belonging to the Arionidae family. It is recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests in Europe, known for its rapid expansion and significant impact on both domestic gardens and commercial farms.
This species is a generalist herbivore, capable of consuming a vast variety of plants. It shows a strong preference for tender leaves, seedlings, and fruits. Its diet includes a wide range of vegetable crops, ornamental plants, and even decaying organic matter, allowing it to survive and proliferate in almost any environment with sufficient humidity.
The life cycle is primarily annual. Adults lay clusters of eggs in damp, dark soil crevices, often under debris or deep within the soil profile. These eggs are resilient to many environmental stressors. Once the hatchlings emerge, they begin feeding immediately, growing rapidly until they reach maturity and start the reproductive cycle again during the next season.
The damage caused by these slugs is significant and easily identifiable. They leave large, ragged holes in foliage and consume entire seedlings. One of the most distinct symptoms is the trail of dried mucus left on plant surfaces. Due to their nocturnal nature, massive damage can occur overnight, often leaving growers unaware of the pest density until it is too late.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices such as maintaining clean field borders, utilizing physical barriers like copper tape or sharp mulch, and manual collection during dusk are effective in small gardens. In agricultural settings, the use of iron phosphate-based molluscicides is recommended as it is safer for non-target wildlife compared to older chemical alternatives.
