Icerya

Icerya is a genus of scale insects within the family Margarodidae. These insects are notorious pests that affect a wide range of agricultural and ornamental plants globally. The most infamous species, the cottony cushion scale (Icerya purchasi), serves as a classic example of an invasive pest that has caused significant economic losses in the citrus industry.

The host range of Icerya is quite extensive. It primarily infests citrus trees, including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, causing severe stress to the trees. Furthermore, it attacks a diverse array of ornamental plants and woody species, such as roses, acacias, pittosporum, and various shrubs. Infestations can lead to stunted growth and, if left unchecked, the death of the host plant.

The biology of this pest is characterized by high reproductive potential. Adult females produce a distinct, fluted ovisac that protects hundreds of eggs. Upon hatching, the first-instar nymphs, commonly referred to as "crawlers," are highly mobile. They move across the plant foliage and branches to find suitable feeding sites, and they can also be dispersed by wind or birds to adjacent plants.

The damage caused by Icerya results from the insects piercing plant tissues to extract sap. As they feed, they excrete large amounts of honeydew, which accumulates on the leaves and branches. This sticky substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, a black fungus that coats the leaves, significantly reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity and hindering its overall physiological development.
