Description
Systematic position. The Egyptian fluted scale (Icerya aegyptiaca) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Monophlebidae (giant scales). It is a significant agricultural pest known for its invasive potential and ability to thrive in tropical and subtropical climates.
Host plants. This pest is a polyphagous insect with a wide host range. It primarily attacks citrus trees, avocado, pomegranate, and various ornamental plants, such as hibiscus and rose, often forming large colonies that quickly cover stems and leaves.
Biology and life cycle. The female produces a distinct, ribbed white wax ovisac, where hundreds of eggs are laid. The life cycle involves several nymphal stages before reaching maturity. The spread of the pest often occurs through the movement of infested plant material and nursery stock across regions.
Damage and economic impact. The scale feeds by inserting its stylets into plant tissues to suck sap. This feeding process results in general plant decline, chlorosis, and stunted growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the market value of fruits and flowers.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Icerya aegyptiaca populations:
- Biological control: introduction and conservation of natural predators, especially the Rodolia species beetles.
