Description

The Seychelles scale (Icerya seychellarum) is a destructive member of the Margarodidae family within the Hemiptera order. This invasive pest is widely recognized for its ability to infest a diverse range of woody perennial plants in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of host plants. Major economic crops at risk include citrus trees, mango, avocado, guava, and various ornamental species like hibiscus and palms. Its ability to thrive on various wild hosts makes eradication efforts particularly challenging for agronomists.

The biological cycle of the Seychelles scale involves eggs, nymphs (crawlers), and adults. Adult females develop a distinct ovisac consisting of white, waxy, cotton-like secretions, where they deposit several hundred eggs. Crawlers represent the primary dispersal stage, moving actively to locate suitable feeding sites on the host plant.

The damage caused by this insect is two-fold. First, it extracts vital sap from the plant tissues, leading to stunted growth and branch dieback. Second, the excretion of honeydew promotes the colonization of sooty mold, which coats the leaves and significantly impairs photosynthesis. Heavy infestations can lead to total crop loss and the eventual death of the host.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Biological control is highly successful, particularly through the introduction of the predatory ladybird beetle Rodolia cardinalis. Additional control measures include:

  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches.
  • Application of horticultural mineral oils to smother the pests.
  • Use of systemic insecticides when biological controls are insufficient.
  • Monitoring programs to prevent further spread of the population.
