Trema fluted scale

The Trema fluted scale (Icerya tremae) is a significant sucking pest belonging to the Margarodidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is primarily recognized as a specialized pest that thrives in tropical environments, causing substantial stress to host plants by feeding on their sap and compromising their vascular integrity.

The host range of this insect includes various woody species, most notably those in the genus Trema, alongside other ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. These pests prefer to colonize young stems, twigs, and the underside of leaves, where they establish colonies and begin draining the plant's essential nutrients.

The life cycle of the scale involves an egg stage, several larval instars, and an adult phase. Adult females are sessile, protected by a waxy, fluted ovisac which creates a distinctive white, cottony appearance on the bark. Conversely, males are winged and mobile, facilitating the reproductive process across dispersed colonies of the pest.

Damage caused by Icerya tremae is characterized by general plant decline, chlorosis, and leaf yellowing. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage. This layer of mold drastically reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize, eventually leading to stunted growth, twig dieback, and in severe cases, the death of the host plant.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control of this scale insect:

• Early detection through regular field inspections of stems and leaf undersides.
• Application of systemic insecticides that target sucking pests during their vulnerable nymphal stages.
