Description
The lac insect (Kerria lacca) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Kerriidae. While globally recognized as the primary source of natural shellac, in certain agricultural settings, these insects can act as pests that deplete the vitality of their host plants. Understanding their systematic position is essential for developing management strategies in areas where they are considered undesirable.
This insect primarily infests woody plants in tropical and subtropical regions, including various species of Acacia, Ficus, and Ziziphus. By feeding on the sap of young stems and branches, the lac insect diverts significant nutrients from the host plant. This feeding behavior can cause stunted growth, reduced vigor, and a general decline in the plant's health, particularly when infestation levels are severe.
The biological cycle of Kerria lacca involves the emergence of mobile larvae, known as crawlers. Once these crawlers settle on a suitable branch, they insert their mouthparts to feed and begin secreting a protective resinous substance. This resin layer gradually covers the insect, creating the characteristic lac crust. The insects remain stationary for the remainder of their development, continuing to feed and expand the resinous coating.
The damage caused by these insects is two-fold: direct nutrient depletion and mechanical obstruction. The continuous extraction of sap weakens the plant tissue, while the thick layer of resin can impede photosynthesis and gas exchange in the stem. Consequently, heavily infested branches may suffer from dieback, leaf loss, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by pathogens and fungi.
Control measures for the lac insect focus on integrated pest management practices. Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches is the most effective mechanical control method to reduce the population density. For chemical control, systemic or contact insecticides are most effective when applied during the crawler stage, before the insects develop their protective resin coating. Mineral oils can also be utilized to help soften the resin and manage localized colonies.
