Paratachardina pseudolobata, commonly known as the lobate lac scale, is a highly invasive insect species belonging to the family Kerriidae. Originally native to parts of Asia, this pest has become a significant concern in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Its presence is marked by the distinctively lobed, dark-brown or black waxy tests (coverings) that female scales build on the stems and twigs of infested plants.
The host range of the lobate lac scale is remarkably broad, with over 300 species of woody plants identified as potential hosts. This includes a wide array of native plants, fruit trees, and ornamental landscaping species. Because it colonizes the woody parts of the plants rather than just leaves, it can be easily overlooked until the infestation has reached critical levels.
The biological cycle of this insect involves a dispersal phase where mobile crawlers move to new feeding sites or are dispersed by wind. Once a crawler settles, it begins to produce its characteristic lobed test. The insect feeds by inserting its specialized mouthparts into the plant's vascular system, extracting essential nutrients and sap, which severely weakens the host plant over time.
Damage caused by this scale insect is multi-faceted. Direct damage results from the extraction of plant sap, leading to wilting, branch dieback, and reduced vigor. Indirect damage occurs when the scale excretes large amounts of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold. This black mold covers the leaves, significantly reducing the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis and leading to further physiological decline.
Management strategies for Paratachardina pseudolobata require a multi-disciplinary approach. Cultural control includes pruning out heavily infested branches and maintaining plant health to improve resistance. Chemical control is challenging due to the protective waxy covering, so systemic insecticides applied as soil drenches or trunk injections are often more effective than contact sprays. Ongoing monitoring is essential to detect early outbreaks before they become unmanageable.
