Paratachardina

Paratachardina

Description

Paratachardina is a genus of insects belonging to the family Kerriidae, within the suborder Coccoidea. These insects are known as specialized pests that can cause significant damage to a variety of woody plants. While some species within this family are used for lacquer production, members of this genus are often viewed as invasive threats to local ecosystems and ornamental landscapes.

The host range for these pests is quite broad. They commonly infest fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and various native tree species. By inserting their stylets into the plant tissue, these insects extract vital phloem sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients and leads to stunted growth and reduced vigor in affected host plants.

The life cycle of Paratachardina is complex and characterized by significant morphological differences between sexes. Females are sedentary, remaining attached to a specific site on the host plant, where they secrete a waxy scale that acts as a protective cover. The first instar larvae, known as crawlers, are the primary dispersal stage, moving across the plant to find optimal feeding sites.

Symptoms of infestation often include yellowing leaves, twig dieback, and general chlorosis. The heavy production of honeydew by these insects frequently leads to the growth of sooty mold, which coats leaves and inhibits photosynthesis. In severe infestations, the sheer density of the pests can lead to branch death and potentially the decline of the entire host tree.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as pruning and removing heavily infested branches can help reduce pest populations. Chemical control involves the application of horticultural oils or systemic insecticides, timed specifically to target the mobile crawler stage. Biological control using predatory lady beetles or parasitoid wasps is also an area of ongoing research.
