Phosalone

Phosalone is a synthetic organophosphate compound classified as an insecticide and acaricide. It is widely employed in global agriculture to combat a broad spectrum of pests that affect agricultural and horticultural crops. Due to its dual action as a contact and stomach poison, it remains a reliable tool for managing pest populations in integrated crop management systems.

The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase within the insect's nervous system. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine at nerve synapses, causing continuous nerve impulses, which result in paralysis and eventual death of the target pest. This mode of action is highly effective against both adult stages and larvae of various species.

Phosalone is used on a variety of crops, including cereals, fruit trees, and various vegetable crops. It is particularly effective against coleopteran (beetles), lepidopteran (caterpillars), and homopteran insects, as well as spider mites. It is often the preferred choice for controlling pests that have developed resistance to other chemical classes, provided it is used within established resistance management guidelines.

Key application features include its notable stability in the field environment and resistance to being washed off by rain once it has dried on the leaf surface. It exhibits consistent efficacy across different temperatures, making it versatile for early-season and mid-season applications. Growers should monitor local regulations regarding maximum residue limits (MRLs) before applying the product near harvest.
