Sophora beetle

The Sophora beetle (scientific name Kytorhinus immixtus) is a member of the seed beetle family (Bruchidae) within the order Coleoptera. This species is recognized as a significant pest, particularly specialized in infesting the seeds of various legume crops in both field and storage conditions.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on the internal components of the legume seeds. These pests are particularly dangerous in grain storage facilities, where they can survive and multiply in closed environments, leading to the destruction of significant portions of stored product.

The life cycle begins when the female lays eggs on the surface of the seeds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the seed, where they undergo development, consuming the germ and endosperm. This internal feeding process makes the infestation difficult to detect in the early stages without specialized equipment.

The impact of Kytorhinus immixtus includes a drastic reduction in seed viability and a significant loss in weight and market quality. Typical signs of infestation include small, circular exit holes on the seed coat, indicating that the adult beetle has emerged from the seed.

Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative and curative measures. These include maintaining proper storage hygiene, ensuring the grain is dry to inhibit rapid development, and conducting chemical fumigation of infested grain stocks to prevent the spread of the beetle to unaffected batches.
