Sharp's bruchid

Kytorhinus sharpianus

Description

Sharp's bruchid (Kytorhinus sharpianus) is a specialized pest of pulse crops, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae. This species poses a significant threat to the stable production of leguminous crops, as the primary stage of its development occurs inside the seeds, making it difficult to detect infestations at an early stage.

The pest primarily targets the seeds of various legume species. It is of particular agricultural concern for crops such as soybeans and cowpeas grown in temperate and warm climates. These insects are capable of damaging crops in both field environments and storage facilities, where they can continue to reproduce rapidly if conditions are favorable.

The life cycle of this insect is closely linked to the phenology of its host plant. Adult beetles deposit eggs on the surface of the pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the seeds, where they feed on the endosperm, consuming the internal contents entirely. The larval development concludes with pupation inside the damaged seed, after which the adult beetle emerges by boring a characteristic circular hole.

Damage symptoms include circular exit holes on the seed coat and a substantial loss of seed weight. Infested seeds lose their germination capacity and become unsuitable for human consumption or processing due to reduced protein content and the accumulation of larval frass. Large-scale infestations in storage can lead to the total loss of commercial grain lots.

Effective control measures involve a combination of management and chemical practices:

  • Implementing crop rotation and ensuring spatial isolation of fields from infested areas.
  • Rigorous sanitation of storage facilities followed by professional fumigation.
  • Utilization of certified, pest-free seed materials for planting.
  • Application of approved insecticides during the pod-setting stage when population thresholds are exceeded.
