Laccophilus minutus

Laccophilus minutus is a species of diving beetle belonging to the family Dytiscidae, order Coleoptera. These small aquatic insects are commonly found in stagnant waters, ponds, and small ditches throughout the Palearctic region. They are highly mobile, possessing a streamlined body that allows them to move efficiently through dense vegetation and water columns.

In terms of agricultural impact, Laccophilus minutus is specifically recognized as a pest within the aquaculture industry. While it does not interact with terrestrial crops, its role as a predator in fish farming environments is significant. It thrives in nursery ponds, where it interferes with the production of fish fry by competing for food or causing direct physical damage to young fish populations.

The life cycle follows complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into aquatic plant stems. Both the larval and adult stages are predatory. The larvae are especially voracious, often reaching high population densities in warm, nutrient-rich water. The rapid maturation of these beetles during the spring and summer months allows for continuous pressure on the ecosystem of the pond.

The economic harm caused by these beetles is twofold. Firstly, they consume significant amounts of zooplankton, which is the essential food source for developing fish larvae, thereby stunting fish growth. Secondly, they directly prey upon fish fry, causing injuries that can lead to mortality or bacterial infections. This leads to a decreased survival rate of the fish stock, negatively impacting the farm's productivity.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation. Essential practices include the complete drainage and drying of ponds after the harvest season to disrupt the beetle's life cycle. Applying lime to the pond bottom helps to eliminate overwintering adults and pupae. Additionally, fine-mesh screening of water inlets prevents adult beetles from colonizing the ponds, effectively safeguarding the vulnerable young fish populations.
