Elongated shield bug

Lagynotomus elongatus

Description

The Elongated shield bug (Lagynotomus elongatus) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. As a sap-sucking pest, it poses a threat to various monocotyledonous crops, where its feeding habits can significantly disrupt plant physiology during critical stages of development.

This species primarily targets cereals such as wheat, barley, and rice. Beyond agricultural fields, the bug thrives on various grasses, which serve as alternative hosts. These wild grasses facilitate the survival and reproduction of the pest, acting as a reservoir for populations that migrate into crops when environmental conditions become favorable.

The biology of Lagynotomus elongatus is characterized by seasonal migration and multiple generations. Adults typically overwinter in plant debris, soil, or sheltered areas near field edges. Once temperatures rise, they emerge to feed and deposit eggs on host plants. The life cycle comprises egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage, with nymphs feeding similarly to adults.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily physiological. By piercing stems and developing grains, the bugs extract plant sap and inject enzymes that cause necrosis and grain shriveling. Severe infestations result in significant yield loss and decreased grain weight, as the plants struggle to translocate nutrients to the spikes after the damage occurs.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers are advised to maintain strict weed control, as non-crop hosts sustain the population. Crop rotation and autumn tillage are critical to reducing the overwintering population. If threshold levels are reached, the application of selective insecticides can prevent widespread damage, provided they are applied during the early nymphal stages.
