Lampetis beetle

The genus Lampetis belongs to the family Buprestidae, commonly known as jewel beetles or metallic wood-boring beetles. These insects are notorious for their ability to infest woody plants, causing significant damage to both commercial fruit orchards and ornamental trees. Adults are recognized by their flattened, elongated bodies and brilliant metallic coloration, which varies between species.

This pest primarily attacks fruit-bearing trees such as stone fruits, including apricot, peach, and plum, as well as several pome fruits. The beetle shows a preference for stressed or weakened trees, using the compromised vascular system to its advantage. By targeting the cambium layer, the larvae essentially girdle the tree, interrupting the flow of water and essential nutrients.

The biological cycle of Lampetis is complex and typically spans one to two years depending on environmental temperature. Female beetles deposit eggs in bark crevices or wounds on the trunk and branches. Upon hatching, larvae burrow directly beneath the bark, creating winding galleries filled with frass. These tunnels expand as the larvae grow, leading to extensive tissue damage.

Visible symptoms of infestation include the presence of D-shaped or oval exit holes, peeling bark, and the localized yellowing or sudden wilting of foliage. Over time, affected branches become brittle and break off, often leading to the eventual death of the entire tree if the infestation is severe. The economic impact can be devastating for orchard owners, especially in arid climates where tree stress is common.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that prioritizes tree health. Key control strategies include:

• Regular removal and burning of infested wood to reduce local populations.
• Maintaining proper irrigation and fertilization to keep trees vigorous and less attractive to borers.
• Applying protective trunk wraps or whitewashing to discourage egg-laying.
• Using targeted insecticide applications during the adult flight period to prevent new infestations.
