The genus Lampetra belongs to the order Petromyzontiformes and the family Petromyzontidae. These organisms are jawless vertebrates that inhabit aquatic environments. It is essential to clarify that lampreys are not agricultural pests and pose no threat to terrestrial crops, garden plants, or forestry production, as they do not consume plant tissues.

The life cycle of a lamprey is complex and strictly aquatic. Larvae, known as ammocoetes, spend several years burrowing in river sediments, filter-feeding on organic detritus and microorganisms. After undergoing metamorphosis, the adults move into larger bodies of water where many species adopt a parasitic lifestyle, attaching themselves to host fish to feed on their fluids.

Because lampreys are specialized aquatic organisms, they do not interact with farming activities. They do not feed on roots, foliage, or fruit, and thus, no agronomic measures for plant protection are required against them. Any reference to lampreys as "pests" is contextually restricted to the fishing industry and aquatic ecosystem management.

The impact of lampreys is limited to freshwater fisheries. In some ecosystems, an overabundance of parasitic lamprey species can deplete local fish populations, which may indirectly affect economic activities related to aquaculture or river fishing. However, this has no bearing on the cultivation of crops or the health of agricultural land.

Control strategies for managing lamprey populations in aquatic environments include:

  • Regular monitoring of larval habitats in riverbeds.
  • Installation of selective barriers to prevent adult lampreys from reaching spawning grounds.
  • Application of species-specific lampricides in localized areas if necessary.
  • Restoration of natural river habitats to balance predator-prey dynamics.
