Description
The genus Petromyzon, primarily represented by the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), consists of jawless vertebrate organisms that act as severe pests in aquatic environments and commercial fisheries. While they do not consume land crops, their impact on fish populations makes them a significant concern for aquaculture managers and ecologists worldwide.
Taxonomically, lampreys belong to the order Petromyzontiformes and the family Petromyzontidae. These organisms are distinguished by their primitive anatomy, lacking bones and jaws. Instead, they possess a specialized buccal funnel equipped with keratinized teeth, which allows them to attach firmly to their hosts to feed on blood and body fluids.
The life cycle of the lamprey is a multi-stage process starting with the ammocoete (larval) phase, which resides in riverbeds feeding on detritus. Following metamorphosis, they enter an adult parasitic phase in larger bodies of water, where they attach to host fish. This parasitism leads to significant blood loss, secondary infections, and often the death of the host species.

Their presence can devastate natural populations and artificially stocked ponds, leading to substantial economic losses for aquaculture facilities that rely on healthy fish populations for harvest.
