Sea lamprey

The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a parasitic vertebrate belonging to the order Petromyzontiformes and the family Petromyzontidae. While often perceived as a purely aquatic issue, its impact on irrigation channels and fishery management makes it a significant concern for the agricultural sector, where integrated water usage for crops and aquaculture is standard.

The biology of the sea lamprey is characterized by a multi-stage life cycle. The larvae, known as ammocoetes, live in river sediment for several years. Once they metamorphose, they move to open water as parasitic adults. This phase is critical as they become highly efficient predators, capable of decimating fish stocks, which directly impacts the productivity and sustainability of agricultural water bodies.

The economic harm caused by this pest is substantial, primarily through the destruction of commercially valuable fish species. In areas where water is managed for irrigation and fish production, the uncontrolled spread of lampreys leads to a collapse in aquatic health, requiring additional financial resources for water treatment and the restoration of ecological stability within the system.

Regarding the nature of damage, lampreys attach to fish with their suctorial mouths. Their sharp, rasping teeth allow them to feed on host fluids, often killing the fish or leaving it severely injured and prone to secondary infections. This high mortality rate among fish populations significantly affects the output of aquaculture farms that depend on stable ecosystem services.

Effective control and mitigation strategies include:
