European brook lamprey

The European brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri) belongs to the Petromyzontiformes order and the Petromyzontidae family. While not a conventional agricultural pest, this species is recognized as a technical nuisance in aquaculture and irrigation management, particularly in farms that rely on natural water sources for crop irrigation and fish breeding operations.

The lifecycle of this species includes a long larval stage known as the ammocoete. Ammocoetes live buried in the sediment of rivers and streams for three to five years, feeding on detritus. Once they reach maturity and metamorphose, they cease feeding and enter a non-parasitic adult phase. During this time, they often inhabit small water channels, which creates potential operational risks for farm infrastructure.

The damage caused by the European brook lamprey is primarily mechanical and related to water management systems. Larvae dwelling in the silty bottoms of irrigation ditches can cause accumulation of sediment and blockages in drainage pipes. These obstructions decrease the efficiency of water delivery to crops and complicate the maintenance of irrigation infrastructure in agricultural zones.

In aquaculture environments, the presence of lampreys can impact water quality. During the post-spawning period, high densities of dead adult lampreys can rapidly decompose in stagnant or low-flow water systems. This process significantly consumes dissolved oxygen, which creates a hazardous environment for fish stocks and necessitates emergency aeration measures to maintain water standards.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Installing fine-mesh filtration screens at irrigation intakes to prevent larval entry.
• Conducting routine dredging and maintenance of canals to eliminate sediment where larvae reside.
• Implementing water quality monitoring systems, especially during spring spawning cycles.
• Restricting the flow of natural water into fish ponds during critical developmental periods of the lamprey.
