Lamprodila jewel beetle

Lamprodila

Description

Systematic position: The Lamprodila genus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae, commonly known as jewel beetles. These insects are distinguished by their iridescent, metallic coloration and are significant pests of wood, particularly in forest ecosystems and urban landscaping.

Affected crops: These beetles primarily infest a variety of deciduous tree species. Common hosts include linden (Tilia), elm (Ulmus), alder (Alnus), and maple (Acer). They often target stressed or weakened trees, using the compromised wood as a nursery for their larvae, which can eventually lead to the tree's total decline.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or summer and may feed on foliage. The females lay eggs in bark crevices. The larvae hatch and bore directly into the cambium layer, where they create extensive, serpentine galleries filled with frass, effectively girdling the branch or trunk over time.

Nature of damage and pest status: Damage is characterized by the presence of D-shaped exit holes on the bark and visible tunneling beneath the bark. As the larvae feed on the cambium and xylem, they destroy the tree's vascular system. This disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, resulting in crown thinning, branch dieback, and increased vulnerability to secondary stressors such as fungi.

Control measures: Management of Lamprodila populations focuses on preventive arboricultural practices. Promoting tree health through irrigation and fertilization reduces susceptibility to attacks. In severe cases, the following measures are recommended:

  • Prompt removal and disposal of infested wood to prevent larval spread.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak adult flight window.
  • Use of pheromone or visual traps to monitor beetle population levels.
  • Maintenance of natural biodiversity to encourage predatory insects.
