Cypress buprestid

The Cypress buprestid (Lamprodila festiva) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Buprestidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of various coniferous trees, specifically those in the Cupressaceae family, and can cause severe damage to nursery stock, ornamental landscapes, and natural stands.

The primary hosts for this pest include species of cypress (Cupressus), thuja (Thuja), and juniper (Juniperus). The beetle exhibits a strong preference for trees that are already under stress, such as those suffering from drought, poor soil conditions, or recent transplantation, although healthy trees are not entirely immune to attack.

The biological life cycle of Lamprodila festiva is characterized by a larval stage that develops beneath the bark. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or summer to mate and lay eggs in bark crevices. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the phloem and cambium layers, constructing complex galleries that disrupt the vascular tissue of the host plant.

The damage caused by these larvae is often internal and lethal. Typical indicators of infestation include localized branch dieback, premature browning of needles, and the presence of small, D-shaped exit holes on the bark surface. As the larval population grows, the galleries can effectively girdle the tree, causing systemic failure and rapid death of the infested host.

Management strategies for controlling the Cypress buprestid involve:

• Regular inspections to detect early signs of larval tunneling or frass accumulation.
• Pruning and destroying infested plant material to reduce the local beetle population.
• Applying systemic insecticides as a preventive measure during the peak flight season of adult beetles.
• Maintaining tree vigor through consistent irrigation and soil nutrient management to minimize susceptibility to attack.
