Elm Buprestid Beetle

Lamprodila nobilissima is a species of metallic wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae. These beetles are significant pests of various deciduous trees, particularly those within the genus Ulmus. Due to their biology, they can cause serious structural damage to the phloem and cambium layers of the host plants.

The primary hosts for this pest include different species of elm trees (Ulmus spp.). The beetle typically targets mature or stressed trees, where the bark structure facilitates the successful development of their larvae. Their presence is often indicative of underlying stress factors within the tree, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or soil compaction.

The life cycle of the beetle involves the deposition of eggs in bark crevices during the summer months. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tree, creating intricate galleries that disrupt the transportation of nutrients and water. This stage is critical for the pest's survival and represents the primary period during which the tree sustains internal injury.

The harm caused by Lamprodila nobilissima is progressive. As larvae feed beneath the bark, they gradually girdle the tree, causing crown dieback, foliage chlorosis, and eventually total necrosis of the wood. If left unchecked, heavy infestations can lead to the mortality of mature trees, posing both ecological and aesthetic risks to urban and forest landscapes.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain tree vitality and mitigate infestation risks:
