Linden buprestid

The Linden buprestid (Lamprodila rutilans) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Buprestidae family. It is a significant pest of lime (Tilia) trees, recognized by its metallic appearance as an adult, while its larvae are known for causing severe damage beneath the bark of host trees.

This species primarily targets Tilia species, including linden and lime trees. It often attacks weakened, stressed, or aging trees. Urban environments, where trees are subjected to pollution, soil compaction, and poor water availability, provide ideal conditions for these beetles to thrive and reproduce.

The life cycle of the linden buprestid typically spans one to two years depending on the climate. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer to mate. Females deposit eggs into cracks and crevices of the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium, creating extensive, winding larval galleries.

The resulting damage is characterized by the interruption of nutrient transport, leading to canopy dieback, yellowing leaves, and in severe cases, the death of the tree. The presence of oval-shaped exit holes on the bark is a key indicator of an infestation. These borings also create entry points for secondary fungal pathogens.

Control strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Preventive measures include maintaining tree vigor through irrigation and proper soil management. When an infestation is detected, infected wood should be removed and destroyed to prevent spreading. Chemical control via systemic insecticides, applied during the peak emergence period of the adults, is considered highly effective for managing populations.
