The Striped jewel beetle (Lamprodila virgata) is a significant wood-boring pest belonging to the Buprestidae family in the order Coleoptera. This insect is primarily recognized for the damage it inflicts on the trunks and branches of various deciduous trees, making it a critical concern for foresters and orchardists alike.

The beetle typically infests a range of broad-leaved trees, including species within the Rosaceae family. While it often targets trees that are already stressed due to environmental factors, drought, or poor soil conditions, it can also establish itself in healthy stands, leading to progressive decline if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of Lamprodila virgata involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females deposit eggs into bark crevices or wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the phloem and cambium layers, creating intricate galleries. This larval activity is the most destructive phase, often lasting over one or more years, effectively disrupting the tree's vascular system.

Symptoms of infestation include branch dieback, premature yellowing of leaves, and the presence of small, characteristic exit holes on the bark surface. As the galleries expand, they impede the flow of nutrients and water, causing the tree to weaken significantly and increasing susceptibility to secondary pathogens or other insect attacks.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on tree vigor and early detection. Cultural practices, such as maintaining proper irrigation and removing infested branches, are fundamental. Chemical control is most effective when timed with the emergence of adult beetles.
