Description
Systematic position of Lasius claviger places it within the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. This species is a member of the subgenus Acanthomyops, commonly known as citron ants due to the distinct lemony scent produced by their defensive secretions when threatened or crushed.
Biology and life cycle are centered around subterranean behavior. These ants rarely emerge above ground. Colony foundation is achieved through temporary social parasitism, where the queen infiltrates the nest of another Lasius species, effectively taking over the colony. The worker ants perform the labor of tunneling and tending to their aphid herds deep within the soil profile.
Crops and damage profile are linked to the ant's symbiotic relationship with root aphids. They infest a wide range of garden crops, ornamental plants, and turfgrass. The ants act as "farmers," physically transporting aphids onto the roots of susceptible plants. The aphids then feed on plant sap, depriving the host of essential nutrients and moisture.
Economic impact (harmfulness) is significant in agricultural and landscape settings. The chronic stress caused by aphid feeding leads to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and potentially plant death. Furthermore, the constant root disturbance by tunneling ants exposes plants to secondary soil-borne pathogens, compounding the negative effects of the aphid infestation.
Control measures require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach because the ants and their aphids are well-protected beneath the soil surface. Key strategies include:

- Cultivation and soil disturbance to destroy tunnels and disrupt aphid colonization.
