Yellow meadow ant

The yellow meadow ant (Lasius flavus) belongs to the Hymenoptera order, Formicidae family. This species is primarily subterranean, spending most of its life cycle underground or within soil mounds. They are characterized by a light yellow to pale brown appearance, allowing them to remain well-hidden within the soil structure.

This pest affects various garden and horticultural crops, including vegetable plants and ornamental shrubs. Its harmful impact is largely indirect; these ants maintain symbiotic relationships with root aphids. By protecting and transporting aphids to plant roots, they facilitate sap feeding, which severely drains the plants of essential nutrients and vigor.

The biology of Lasius flavus is defined by the development of expansive, long-lasting colonies. Their life cycle comprises eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. A prolific queen supports a growing number of workers, which systematically excavate soil galleries. These galleries can disturb soil aeration and moisture retention near the roots of vulnerable plants.

The damage caused by these ants manifests as stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and reduced harvest yields. As they displace soil around the root zone, the plants suffer from root starvation and increased susceptibility to fungal diseases introduced or exacerbated by the aphid secretions (honeydew) that accumulate in the soil tunnels.
