Description

Systematic position: The genus Leptodictya belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Tingidae. These insects are commonly known as lace bugs due to the intricate, reticulated, lace-like appearance of their hemelytra and pronotum, which provides both camouflage and protection.

Affected crops: These pests primarily target grass species (Poaceae). They represent a significant concern for cereal production, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to commercial crops, they often inhabit various wild grasses, which function as reservoirs for the population throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter in crop residues, leaf litter, or the upper soil horizons. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge, migrate to young cereal plants, and begin feeding, followed by oviposition on the undersides of the leaves.

Damage and impact: Feeding activity involves piercing leaf tissues and extracting cellular sap. This creates chlorotic spots (stippling) on the foliage. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, leading to severe leaf yellowing, desiccation, and impaired photosynthetic activity, which ultimately results in reduced grain yield and poor quality.

Protection measures: Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • implementation of crop rotation to break the pest cycle;
  • thorough post-harvest tillage to bury crop residues and destroy overwintering sites;
  • maintenance of weed-free field margins;
  • scouting for early infestation signs and application of systemic insecticides when economic thresholds are met.
