Systematic position: Leptodictya tabida (Herrick-Schaeffer) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. Commonly known as the sugarcane lace bug, this insect is recognized as a significant pest affecting agricultural crops, specifically within the Saccharum genus, due to its specialized feeding habits.
Host plants and economic impact: The primary host for this pest is sugarcane. The insect infests leaves, causing damage by piercing and sucking plant sap. This feeding behavior reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in lower sugar content, stunted growth, and a decrease in the overall biomass production of the plantation.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Leptodictya tabida is completed on the leaves of the host plant. Females deposit eggs within the leaf tissue, and the nymphs emerge to feed immediately.
