Leptopharsa is a genus of insects belonging to the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are distinguished by the intricate, net-like appearance of their wings and pronotum. While there are various species within this genus, Leptopharsa gibbicarina is particularly significant in agriculture for its devastating impact on avocado production in tropical and subtropical regions.

The primary host for this pest is the avocado tree, where both nymphs and adults concentrate their feeding activity. They exhibit a distinct preference for the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves. By remaining on the underside, they are protected from direct exposure to pesticides and natural predators, making control efforts more challenging for commercial growers.

The biology of Leptopharsa revolves around a rapid reproductive cycle. Females typically lay eggs inside the leaf tissue along the primary and secondary veins. The nymphs undergo several molts before reaching maturity. In optimal conditions, such as high humidity and stable warm temperatures, the development of a generation occurs quickly, allowing the population to build up rapidly over the course of the growing season.

The feeding habit of Leptopharsa involves piercing plant cells and extracting sap, which results in characteristic chlorotic spotting on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, leading to necrosis and premature leaf drop. The resulting reduction in leaf surface area diminishes the tree's photosynthetic capacity, causing stunted growth, decreased fruit set, and significant economic losses for producers.

Managing Leptopharsa requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • Regular scouting of avocado orchards to identify initial pest colonization sites.
