Systematic position: Leptothorax belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Formicidae. These are relatively small ants, often characterized by a discrete lifestyle, frequently inhabiting decayed wood, hollow plant stems, or crevices within the soil layer in agricultural and garden environments.

Host plants: In an agronomic context, these ants can affect a variety of garden plants, fruit trees, and ornamental crops. While they do not usually consume plant tissue directly in large quantities, their presence is linked to the maintenance of sap-sucking insects that rely on the ants for protection.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle follows the standard ant development pattern consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Colonies are typically small and cryptic, making them difficult to detect until the population density increases. They thrive in environments with sufficient moisture and shelter, often settling near the root zones or in the lower parts of plant stems.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The primary harm is indirect. These ants have a mutualistic relationship with aphids and scale insects, protecting them from predators and parasites in exchange for honeydew. This leads to heavy infestations of sap-sucking pests, which cause plant stunting, yellowing of leaves, and the promotion of sooty mold growth on honeydew deposits.

Protection measures: Management strategies focus on sanitation and limiting the resources the ants rely on:

• Elimination of nesting sites by removing rotting wood, debris, and excessive mulch from the planting area.
• Application of insecticidal baits that utilize the ants' foraging behavior to transfer toxic substances back to the queen and larvae.
• Use of mechanical trunk barriers or sticky traps on trees to disrupt the pathway for ants tending to aphids in the canopy.
• Implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) to control aphid populations, thereby removing the ants' primary food source.
