In farming environments, these hares can cause extensive damage to various cultivation systems, particularly when natural forage becomes scarce.

The diet of the Tolai hare is broad and consists mainly of grasses, forbs, and shrubs. However, their dietary habits change seasonally. During winter, when snow cover or lack of green vegetation limits their natural food sources, they frequently raid orchards and croplands. Their feeding activity is most destructive in nurseries where young, succulent plant tissues provide an easy target for these opportunistic herbivores.
